Photographer commissioned to document Middlesbrough's £200m RiversideOne development

25/02/2011 Photographer commissioned to document Middlesbrough's £200m RiversideOne development

Sustainable community developer BioRegional Quintain has commissioned a professional photographer to document construction at RiversideOne, the £200m development that is rapidly regenerating the Middlehaven Docks area of Middlesbrough.

Kirstie Handley, from Yarm, has been appointed to photograph the construction of the first apartment building and ongoing progress at RiversideOne which, once complete, will comprise 750 homes and provide Middlesbrough with a vibrant new district in which people can live, work and relax.

Kirstie, who initially trained as a press photographer, has started documenting the construction of the first building which will be completed this summer and is called CIAC (Community in a Cube). She estimates taking in the region of 2,000 photographs by the time the construction of CIAC is completed and some of her work is already available for view on the RiversideOne blog at www.riverside-one.com/blog

Pete Halsall, BioRegional Quintain’s managing director, commissioned Kirstie to photograph CIAC after seeing the outstanding work she carried out photographing the construction of Temenos, the dual ringed public art installation created by artist Anish Kapoor.

Situated on the banks of the River Tees close to Middlesbrough Football Club’s Riverside Stadium, Temenos will be visible from many of the apartments located on the top two floors of CIAC.

Pete said: “CIAC is a radical building based on a unique concept and we wanted to chart its whole construction from start to finish. Kirstie has an eye for capturing the essence of the atmosphere, including the people and processes that contribute to it. Using this special skill she is building a pictoral account of CIAC’s evolution, and every detail integral to it.”

With work underway, BioRegional Quintain anticipates that the first CIAC residents will be able to move into the building in the summer of 2011.

Kirstie said: “I am thrilled to be able to work on this project and to be part of a team creating this really amazing new part of Middlesbrough. I’m looking to faithfully document progress using powerful and striking imagery as the development evolves and grows.”

A total of 80 studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments priced from £79,995 to £199,000 are currently being built within CIAC (Community in a Cube), the first residential building at RiversideOne. Once complete RiversideOne will be the UK’s largest zero carbon development and comprise 750 homes located in 15 buildings.

A show apartment is located within the marketing suite at RiversideOne demonstrating both the excellent level of specification available and quality of building materials being used at CIAC.
