one planet living

10 principles that will change
the world.

As a guide to help us live a One Planet Living® lifestyle BioRegional and WWF International have developed a simple set of principles, which can make sustainable living easy, attractive and affordable.

  • zero carbon

    • RiversideOne is designed to be very energy efficient as well as zero carbon. The buildings will be highly insulated to stay warm in winter, with argon filled double glazing and energy efficient lighting and appliances. The concrete frame construction will enable the building to stay cool in summer by absorbing heat. The reduced demand for heat and electricity will be met using renewable energy generated from both on-site (biomass boiler) and offsite sources (wind power) to achieve net zero carbon dioxide emissions.
  • zero waste

    • Recycling and composting will be made easy at RiversideOne through the provision of on-site waste segregation and composting facilities. As part of a sustainable approach to resource management, support and guidance will be offered to residents to help reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.
  • sustainable transport

    • A managed car park will be provided for residents (please ask your sales negotiator for full details). The development will also provide RiversideOne and the wider area of Middlehaven with a number of additional and sustainable transport options. A car club will be established to provide the convenience of payas-you-go motoring without the expense and hassle of car ownership for those who don’t need or want a car. Car use and transport-related emissions will be reduced at RiversideOne by providing access to local services and public transport and facilities for cyclists. Plans for office, leisure and retail space along with the new Middlesbrough College make it possible to live, work, play and learn at RiversideOne.
  • local and sustainable materials

    • RiversideOne has been designed to make full use of local, healthy, natural, reclaimed and recycled materials. Some of the construction materials are the most advanced and sustainable in the UK , providing the possibility of long term heath benefits to residents. The energy used to extract, process, refine and transport materials (embodied energy) as well as pollution and waste generated, will be reduced. Locally-sourced materials will be used to reduce transport impacts and to support the local economy.
  • local and sustainable food

    • A key aim of RiversideOne is to make it easy and affordable to get fresh and organic food , and to encourage the consumption of local and seasonal produce. There will be spaces on site for food-growing in mini-allotment plots, food box delivery facilities and an events square to host local “farmers and foodies” markets. The development will be peppered with fruit trees to provide food and colour to the landscape. Food box ordering and cooking skills will be supported by the community extranet.
  • sustainable water

    • The apartments will be specified with the latest water efficient appliances and fittings, with the aim to significantly reduce domestic water consumption . Rainwater will be used within the landscape for irrigation and amenity, and where necessary will be discharged into the dock to reduce the load on local drainage systems.
  • natural habitats and wildlife

    • The aim is to make RiversideOne a place where flora and fauna can flourish to enhance the ecological value of the area in harmony with the needs of the community. The encouragement of wildlife will be considered through design and planting solutions to create habitats and promote aesthetic and ecological value.
  • culture and heritage

    • Designs by leading architectural practices will ensure the new iconic buildings and facilities will build on the existing and past local culture and heritage of Middlesbrough. A governance organisation and the community extranet will be established to support the RiversideOne residents. The RiversideOne arts strategy, which has the support of the Arts Council and MIMA will aim to bring alive the cultural and historic aspects of the site. A number of exciting and best in class events and festivals are planned .
  • equity and fair trade

    • A significant proportion of the development-associated investment will be targeted towards the local economy, optimising the use of local skills, materials and services . There will be a government supported incentive scheme to support first time buyers, and space in the development will be allocated to support local community and interest groups.
  • health and happiness

    • The ultimate aim is for RiversideOne to become a truly sustainable community - a place where people can live happy and healthy high quality lifestyles in a safe, comfortable and desirable environment.
planets

higher quality of life. better for our one planet.

One Planet Living® is about the choices and challenges we all face if we are to enjoy a high quality of life within the resources of the planet. If everyone in the world consumed the planet's natural resources at the same rate as people in the UK, we would need three planets to support us.

It is now possible for everyone to help reduce their impact on the environment and the natural resources they use. You can start to apply the One Planet Living® principles to your everyday activities and begin to make a difference.

The 'One Planet Living®' initiative not only shows how this can be done but also how each of us can live a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle.

It's all about reducing our ecological footprint ? that's the amount of natural resources we use. As a start we can all reduce the electricity we use, recycle waste we no longer require and eat locally produced food.
